What began as a flood control project in 1972 ended as being a year round recreational park that draws over 150,000 visitors per year. Mauch Chunk Lake Park, located in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, has facilities for many outdoor activities such as camping, biking, hiking, fishing and canoeing or kayaking on Mauch Chunk creek.
Mauch Chunk Lake is open year round and is designated a Large Bass Lake which means that bass taken from the lake must be at least 15”.
Mauch Chunk Lake Park is 3,400 acres of wilderness, wetlands and open fields. The wildlife is plentiful and bird watching and wildlife viewing is excellent. Some of the animals you will experience here is white tailed deer, black bear, wild turkeys, red fox and even a bald eagle near the Beach of Mauch Chunk Lake.
Mauch Chunk Lake sits just under the Flagstaff Mountain and the beach is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Swim, Boat, Sunbathe and relax with full services always nearby at the Beach Pavilion. There is an admission fee for the beach of $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children unless you are a Carbon County resident, and then the fee is slightly less. Pets are not permitted on the beach at any time.
There are two hiking and biking trail and one for hiking only. Two more secondary trails can be accessed from the Switchback trail just below the dam. The Shoreline trail is considered difficult to navigate and is not recommended for inexperienced hikers or bikers.
Camping is available at Mauch Chunk Lake Park with primitive sites. These sites have a picnic table and fire pit and room for parking one vehicle. Cottages are also available for those who want to rough it a little less primitive. Cottages have electricity but no cooking amenities.
